Editor’s comment: Such a great reminder: that’s life’s grandest cures are as simple as life itself.

Dr. Mardy's Quotes of the Week

Editor’s comment: Dr. Mardy Grothe is a guy I’ve followed since seeing him as a Vistage speaker 20+ years ago. His Saturday night posts (last week is featured below) are well worth your (and my) time. This week’s quotes and notes theme (Insecurity) triggered my blog this month so I thought it a good time to show you his work. Hope you sign up to receive his weekly email; it’s free and highly enjoyable. Marty surely must be by now the leading authority on quotes and wordsmithing as you can also check out his great books like “I never metaphor I didn’t like” and “Oxymoronica”.
The 10 Toughest Questions We Get | Bill Gates & Melinda Gates

Editor’s comment: I’m careful about famous heroes, it’s like they are just as flawed and vulnerable as I am. But I do hold up a lot of people, both famous and local, as models for my own behavior and this letter reminds me why Bill and Melinda Gates have become models for me. Hope you enjoy.

The Power of Meaning | Emily Esfahani-Smith

Editor’s Note: Like so many of the articles I share, this one came to me via www.dailygood.org, a wonderful website whose messages I receive every morning. My “search for meaning” is lifelong and Emily has given me here a new concept to look into, Aristotle’s “eudaimonia”.
The World in 2018 | The Economist

Editor’s note: For this one time, I’ve chosen a magazine of the month. I finally broke down and bought a subscription to The Economist in 2017 having only enjoyed airport newsstand copies when I was in the mood. It’s been a good purchase. This bonus issue came before the holidays then and I found it fascinating. Their writing is excellent, topics are well chosen and as with all predictions, a certain boldness is required. Purchase or read what you can online. It’s well worth the time.
Money and the Meaning of Life | Bill Taylor

Editor’s note: Alice and I have been what can be described in this country as poor and we now fit the description of rich. And in both cases, I’ve worried about the burdens of one and the other. More so, I remain vigilant about my relationship to money. Thanks to my Mom, once basic needs are met, the only life matters worth paying real attention to are my relationships. This brief article from HBR nails it spot on for me. As Taylor suggests, I’ll also pick up Jacob Needleman’s book once it’s back in print.
The Temptation to Lie | Norman Brodsky

Editor’s Note: I love this simple old fashioned business lesson, reported here by Brodsky in a current situation. Most of my mentoring time is with small business where the temptations to lie are particularly enticing. The most common “lie” is hiding cash from government reporting. I used to lecture them, now I just show them what their business is worth with full tax reporting and how much less it’s worth without.
