Money and the Meaning of Life | Bill Taylor

Editor’s note: Alice and I have been what can be described in this country as poor and we now fit the description of rich. And in both cases, I’ve worried about the burdens of one and the other. More so, I remain vigilant about my relationship to money. Thanks to my Mom, once basic needs are met, the only life matters worth paying real attention to are my relationships. This brief article from HBR nails it spot on for me. As Taylor suggests, I’ll also pick up Jacob Needleman’s book once it’s back in print.
Money may be the root of all evil, but only if you are not honest about what it means to you.

Editor’s note: If you like history, spiced up by great writing, this is a can’t miss. It reads like a novel and yet I learned very interesting detail about man’s early quest to fly and also about a very interesting family. I was also a bit stunned to learn about the business and financial outcomes of their ventures.

Think about the key decisions facing you. Perhaps you’ve been putting one of them off. Perhaps you’re facing one deadline or another - buying or selling a home, hiring or letting go of an employee, making a decision on your career or family path.

The Temptation to Lie | Norman Brodsky

Editor’s Note: I love this simple old fashioned business lesson, reported here by Brodsky in a current situation. Most of my mentoring time is with small business where the temptations to lie are particularly enticing. The most common “lie” is hiding cash from government reporting. I used to lecture them, now I just show them what their business is worth with full tax reporting and how much less it’s worth without.
In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on.
