January Song: The Pretender
Artist: Jackson Browne [more]

Essence of the music/lyrics: Another 70's song; songs I like because they seem to mark our generation's dawning awareness of the constant struggle between money and love. Browne captures the paradox of 1965 to 1985 I believe when he says in verse 2: "I want to know what became of the changes we waited for love to bring. Were they only the fitful dreams of some greater awakening?." And while there are certainly substantial exceptions, I believe we are much closer today to that awakening than we were 25 years ago.

Excerpt:
"Caught between the longing for love and the striving for legal tender..."
